The 1860 census for Surry County, North Carolina includes a Joel Tilley, with wife, Martha, and children John and Mary. He does not appear in 1870, but Martha is there with additional children Robert, James, and Joel. By 1880 Martha has remarried and two of her sons, James and Joel, are living with her. I have discovered that the son Robert's middle name was Leak, so I'm thinking the elder Joel may have been a son of Thomas Jefferson Tilley and Nancy Leak. Does anybody know for sure?

Also, there is a 1926 death certificate for a Joel Dabner Tilley in Rockingham County, North Carolina. His birth date is listed as 1857, and his parents are given as Thomas J. Tilley and Nancy Leak. Unless Nany's age is way off on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, I think she may have been too old to have a child in 1857. Any ideas out there?!!!
