Dennis was born July 25, 1822 in Ledge of Rocks District, Knap of Reeds Post Office, NC. He first married Mary (Bond?) and had a daughter Sarah Mildred Tilley in abt 1845 (she married William A. Lunsford Oct.6, 1864)
He then married Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins in 1854 (mother was a Lyon) and had three children: Rufus in 1856 (may have died in 1861), Ada in 1858 and Lucius Thomas on Nov 26, 1859 in Granville Co., NC (married Emma Potter Stone).
Dennis was a well-known tobacco grower and was said to have been the first to cure tobacco with charcoal (family lore says that he returned from "the war" too late to cure his crop naturally in the sun).He was also a Justice of the Peace and a Bondsman. Census records say that his parents were born in N.C.
An interview in 1936 quotes a nephew named J. Norman Tilley.
Anyone researching this line of Tilleys? I have information for the family of Lucius Thomas Tilley.
