In Reply to: William Tilley, Boston Rope-maker by Stephen J. Tilley of 2515

Stephen,
I have a copy of a book written in 1878 by a R. Hammett Tilley of Newport, R.I. the following is the first page or so of the book. William Tilley, the rope-maker of Boston, born in England about 1641; died in Boston, 1717. Married for his first wife, Isabella_____. She died, January 13, 1702. They had two children.
1.Isabella
2.Grace
1.Isabella (Armitage)Born, May 23, 1691; died ___. Married Eliezur Armitage, about July, 1709; their intention to marry was published, March 30, 1709.
2. Grace (Clarke) born, Nov.4th, 1692; died ____. Married Jonas Clarke, Nov.25th, 1715.

William Tilley, the rope-maker, married his second wife Abigail Woodmancy, Jan 27th, 1703. she, after the death of her husband, married Judge Sewall of Boston, in 1718. The three cousins of William Tilley, the rope maker, William, John and James, were much younger, and their genealogy we shall give under their respective heads.

The oldest cousin,
William Tilley, Jr. was born in Exeter, England, about 1685. He came to Boston, Mass, where he married his wife,Dorcas, in 1736. we can find no record of his death, nor that of his wife. It is supposed that he had but one child, who was born in Newport, R.I.,where he established himself in business. His son William was born soon after their arrival in Newport. From this son we trace our record to the present day.

The genealogy of John and James will follow that of William.

It is a small book, only about 80 pages - I would be more than glad to mail you a copy if it is something that would help you.

I too am researching the Tilley line - the earliest date I have is 1820 in Georgia. His name is George Tilley and he married Sarah Simms in Talifferro County Ga. I have always felt that he must have come from North Carolina - as the Simms and the Dickinson's came from there and they all seemed to move into the same areas. Have you run across a George Tilley born in the late 1700's who the family lost track of? While I have a great deal of info on this Tilley line(even a few letters written during the 1850's and some during the Civil War) - the birth place of George has eluded me.

Let me know if I can be of any help -

Sincerely, Linda D. Hoerner
