Henry Tilley, who was born in 1753 in Albemarle Co, VA, and served in the NC Militia from Stokes Co., NC, was the son of a Henry Tilley who was in Albemarle Co. in 1752 buying 200 acres of land from Thomas Wright. When he came to Albemarle Co. and from whence, I have no firm knowledge, but he was in Carolina in 1777 when he sold 129 acres to John Black in Albemarle.

Here is a summary of the 8 Indentures involving Henry Tilley during that 25 year period, 1752-1777, which I copied in 1986,

June 11, 1752: Henry Tilley of Albemarle Co. purchased 200 acres in St. Ann's Parish on Branches of Ivy Creek, for 30 Lbs. from Thomas Wright.

Dec. 20, 1761: Henry Tilley, Jr. and wife Jane sold 294 acres in Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., to Phillip Thurman, for 30 Lbs. Wife Jane in text, and Jean at signature line; Property was adjacent to property of Capt. Joseph Martin;(!!) and no "marks" shown at signature lines.

June ll, 1765: Henry Tilley and wife Ann sold 140 acres in Albemarle Co. to Edward Blackburn, which land was described in Patents from Secretaries Office dated August 16, 1756, and February 14, 1761, for 40 Lbs.H
Henry's mark was like a capital I, only like an H on its side. Ann's mark was like a slim S, almost like a snake standing on its tail.

June 13, 1765: Henry Tilley and wife Ann sold 140 acres in Albemarle Co. (Those 2 tracts of land at the head of Ivy Creek granted by Patents from the Secretary's Office dated August 16, 1756, and February 14, 1761) for 40 Lbs, to Edward Blackburn. Henry's mark again was like an H on its side, or a capital I. Ann, his wife, did not sign this one, but in the acknowledgment is called Anne. (This appears to be a supplemental Indenture.)

April ll, 1769: Henry Tilley bought 129 acres on the south Brance of Meecham's River for 30 Lbs, in Albemarle Co., VA, St. Ann's Parish, from David Lewis, Jr.

July 14, 1771: Henry TILLERY sold 400 Acres (Plantation and Tract of Land) on both sides of Edge's Creek for 40 Lbs. to Thomas Collins, land patented to Henry TILLERY on September 20, 1768. Thomas Jefferson signed the Indenture as a witness, and the 400 acres adjoined land of Benjamin Wheeler, who married Henry's daughter_______, and who is listed as a Legatee in the sale of Henry"s estate (2:186a. Surry Co., NC Will Abstracts.)

Nov. 14, 1776: Henry Tilley sold 200 acres on the branches of Ivy Creek, in St. Ann's Parish, for 115 Lbs, to Lowell Woolfolk (or Sowell). "The same being part of a tract sold to Thomas Wright by Charles Lynch, Gentleman). Henry's Mark: I, or the capital H on its side.

Aug. 14, 1777: Henry Tilley of CAROLINA sold to John Black l29 acres on the South Branch of Micham's River for 30 Lbs.
___________________________________________

Interesting that Henry was neighbor to Captain James Martin, who ended up a neighbor in Stokes Co., and into whose family certain Tilleys married; and that Benjamin Wheeler, also an Albemarle neighbor, ended up marrying Henry's daughter________.

Also, I've lived just west of Charlottesville, VA in Albemarle Co., along US 250 West, out around Ivy, and Ivy Creek, and more beautiful rolling hill land is hard to come by. Why Stokes Co?

Questions:

1. Were Henry Tilley, Jr. and Wife Jane (in 1761) the same as Henry Tilley and Wife Ann (in 1765)?
2. Henry bought and then sold 2 parcels: one 200 acres, and another 129 acres. However, he sold 3 more parcels: 294, 400, and 140 acres, for which I found no evidence of purchase. When and from who did he obtain these 3 parcels?
3. Leaving aside the Henry Tilley born in 1753, were there 2 other Henrys (born 1701 and 1725) involved here in Albemarle? HEnry and Jane and Henry and Ann? (Henry and Jane's Indenture (1761) has no "marks" at the signature line. Henry and Ann's Indenture has marks for each, as described above.)
4. The 2 tracts of land sold in 1765 and the 400 acres sold in 1771 were granted to Henry by patents from the Secretary's Office.
Were there other patents to Henry in VA, and just what were Patents and how did Henry get them?

I see on the Forum that Gail Blancett has done some research in this area, so I welcome her insightful comments on the HEnry Tilley Albemarle land transactions, and how they may delineate the 2 or 3 Henry Tilleys in Albemarle in the 1750's and later.

Hope the above is helpful, and elicits comments, corrections, and/or additions.

John Morrison
