Hello Rick,
I am interested to read of your success in tracing your family history back to the 1600’s.
The change of spelling from Thames to Timbs is particularly interesting as the Timbs name exists in early records in England and from very early 1800s in Australia (that is very early for us). Of course the name exists in other English speaking countries as well.
You appear to be saying that all your ancestors prior to your great grandfather used the Thames spelling. I wonder what prompted your grandfather to make the change?
Searching early records in Australia is made difficult by the widespread use of aliases for a variety of reasons not necessarily related to concealing criminal records. More often it was a case of using permits issued to somebody else,
