I think I may have found a little information for you.
Was your mother's name Octavia "Tavie"? I found the following in the 1930 Census, North Carolina, Pitt, Greenville, District 28 (image 32 of 35 at Ancestry.com)
Tavie Tingen, Head
James E. Tingen, son
Margaret Tingen, daughter
Marvin Tingen, son
William Tingen, son
Was your grandmother's name Emily and did your grandfather pass away shortly after your father was born? I ask because I found the following in the 1880 Census, North Carolina, Person, Allensville, District 206 (image 17 of 28 at Ancestry.com)
Ambrose Tingen, Head, age 60
Jane Tingen, wife, age 56
Rebecca Tingen, daughter, age 36
Mary Tingen, daughter, age 27
Benjamin Tingen, son, age 20
James Tingen, son, age 17
Alsey Tingen, daughter, age 14
Lucy Tingen, daughter, age 10
Emily Tingen, daughter-in-law, age 27 (I pressumed that she was William's widow since he isn't listed and she is living with her in-law's but he could have just been "away" looking for work or something)
William Tingen, grandson, age 7
Martha Tingen, granddaughter, age 5
For some reason there is no mention of Effie, who should have been about 2 years old if he was born in 1878 - maybe he was napping or someone took him for a walk or something!! These Census forms can be very helpfull and full of incorrect information all at the same time!!
I haven't found anything else as yet but I will look for more over the weekend. My email address is email@example.com and I would be happy to try to email copies of the Census forms if you would like to send me your email address.
As exciting as it is to find information it's even more so to be able to share it!!
Your "cousin" Tracey
