The Tingen surname comes from the area of Drenthe, Netherlandsfor me because that's where my grandfather, Jans Tingen, was born on 14 Aug. 1863. He came because of Mormon missionaries coming to the Netherlands to convert new members. He met my grandmother, Johanna Elizabeth Van Veen, in Ogden,Utah. She was also Dutch from Rotterdam, born 19 June 1872. They could not speak Dutch to each other because their languages were so different. They married in 1901. My grandfather's family tree reaches back to the late 1700's in the Netherlands and I suspect, much earlier.
