Thanks for the message Charles. Checking the Ellis Island database doesn't do any good because my family arrived in the 1880's which means they came through Castle Gardens , an old fort on the lower tip of Manhattan (now Battery Park). In 1855 it was designated as an immigrant station under state supervision. It functioned until 1890 when Ellis Island took over emigrant processing.
