"The Microsoft Word Help suggests that you can automatically generate an index. Sorry, but you can't (the "result" looks like an index but the reader can't use it)."
Do you understand what that parenthetical statement means exactly? Why can't the reader use it? Does "use" mean that the resulting index can't be edited? If it does a good indexing job but then the index is locked that wouldn't necessarily be a problem, as long as the index could be cut and pasted onto the end of the indexed document. However, given the complex nature of creating a good index of genealogical materials I'm guessing that an index that couldn't be edited at all would not likely be very satisfactory.
But I do wonder exactly what that person meant by "...the reader can't really use it." And which version of Word does this refer to?
