I had also not heard of 'quarter loss.' I agree with Bill's explanation.
I normally think more in terms of 10 generations which is 1024 at that generation plus the 1023 preceding. Most of us cannot go back 10 generations on every line.
In my early American ancestry (before I hit water), at tops 13 generations, I have three ancestors I descend from twice and one set three times. This still leaves me with a lot of surnames.
