A GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communications) is a plain text file using a standard format that allows the transfer of data between different genealogical software programs that support the GEDCOM format. Most western genealogical programs do support the format and usually have details in the program's "help" files as to the steps to follow for export/import.

It is necessary to have a genealogical program that supports the format in order to read the data.
