Dear Betty,

I am all ears – how can we hurt them? I have watched the last ten years while this freight train has gone completely out of control. The LDS Church records had some problems they made some attempt for sources and labeled records accordingly.

Ancestry is a monster. I only know that because I have a membership. Now they give the FTM software away because you must give them your research.

This is really not anything new. Books and Journals (genealogy or otherwise) have always had caveats. I always have my Computer Science students read the caveat in their $100+ text book – nothings is expected to be correct in text or code and we are not liable. (That is my summary of about 100 lines.)

So it is really nothing new but it is the massive exposure, errors and money being made. There is also no oversight.

I have no idea how to even slow them down much let made them ‘clean up their act.’ No one wants to be responsible for saying what is correct. DAR has been hit repeatedly because they verify papers. They have also been embarrassed so that they try to require better documentation. Ancestry is not embarrassed and it is the ‘greater fool theory.’

There is a Computer Science term – GIGO – Garbage In – Garbage Out. That is what we are dealing with in these undocumented trees. I am so glad I am finished with my reasonable ancestry except for this remote East German-Czech border family. Believe me there is nothing on the web on this family.

Cheers!

Sherry
