Starting Sept. 30, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

Genealogy still means all of those things that you mentioned.

There have always been and will always be both the casual and the more serious genealogist. The advent of the internet just made the former more obvious.

My mother in law started researching her family history well before the internet came to be. She did a mediocre job at best so pre- internet research doesn't in itself make anyone a better genealogist than a post internet one.

There has always been erroneous information out there. Again, the internet just made it much more obvious.

I don't know where you got the idea that "The latest versions of FTM only allow posting online" but that is not the case. There is a Member Tree feature that can be used to upload or create an online tree but it doesn't have to be used. The genealogy file is on your computer just like it always has been.

We can only encourage people to document the facts in their family history, we can't make them do it.
