Thank you for the response. There were no minor children involved when she died. All were adult at that point. Since James was about the exact same age as the others mentioned in the records (and they were all born in SC), I don't think he was an adopted nephew. He is the same age as her KNOWN children.

The people being researched at this point are all born in SC and lived in St. Clair County, Alabama from the 1840's until VERY late 1800's.

They are:
Mary Cowan (died 1857)in St. Clair
James Cowan b.1825 in SC, married Margaret Moore in 1844 St. Clair, he died after the 1880 census

I assume James died in St. Clair, but haven't been able to find evidence yet. His wife is living near their son in St. Francis County, Arkansas as a widow in 1900. It's possible that he died in Arkansas (on on the way somewhere), but I have been unable to find any trace.
