Thanks again for your reply. You are quite right about depending on a program that no one else has or uses, I'll look at that further before I commit a lot of time to captioning photos in ACDSee.
One thing I can do with that program very easily is 1) add a border followed by 2) type text and place it into the border. I am effectively editing the .jpg so anyone looking at the photo in the future will see it with the text printing right there -- but you can still crop off the text if you want to use the photo somewhere else without the caption.
You are also correct about the default scan name e.g. scan0001 etc. I ran into a problem scanning in September & October because my default stores in a monthly folder starting over with 0001 -- then when I wanted to copy to my main "unsorted" folder, I had duplicate names.
I was allowing the default because I was scanning lots of photos from the album pages at once and I didn't always know at that time who were in the photos; I thought it would be easier to rename them later -- actually what I do is print out 4 photos/sheet then I sit with my Mom & her cousin and actually write on the photos as we determine their content.
I think my probem is not creating and using more sub-folders. I'm allowing hundreds of scans to accumulate in one folder when I should be moving them off to a sub-folder as I identify and rename each photo. (Thinking out loud here). I also like your word document idea for id'ing large family group pictures.
Thanks for your suggestions. Busy Canadian Thanksgiving weekend coming up with son & girlfriend coming home from University -- so no more genealogy until next week!! /Cathy
