Best way to find birth records before Vitals recorded?

I have the date of birth for an ancestor born in Philadelphia, but it is a date before Philadelphia started keeping county/town records.

My ancestor: John Agar Grier, born in Philadelphia August 18, 1847. I'm trying to track down a record of his birth so I can confirm his parents names. I have his death certificate, but it's just my luck that where his parents names are listed it's almost impossible to positively make out their names. It looks like Timothy Grier and Florinda Rush.

How do I go about finding and searching Parish records? I have no idea which Parish to look up . Is this an impossible task?
thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to give!!
