Too many Shirley Tisdales!!!
As a background, I am descended from Shirley Tisdale of Limestone Co., AL.I have constructed a timeline for him as follows:
--1788 b. VA
--Sep.12 , 1812 Elected Ensign of the Petersburg Volunteers in Dinwiddie Co., VA along with 1st Lt. William Tisdale.
--1812-1813 Served in the Petersburg Volunteers throughout the War of 1812 serving under General Harrison.
--17 Feb 1816 married Ann Elizabeth Conway Blick in Brunswick Co., VA
--1820 on census for Hertford Co., NC
--1830 on census for Northampton Co., NC
--1830 postmaster in Northampton Co., NC at Peebles Tavern
--1832 founding board memberfor Northampton Female Seminary.
--1834-1838 listed on various deeds in Northampton Co., NC
--April 1835 appointed delegate to the Democratic Republican convention from Northampton Co., NC
--1840 on census for Limestone Co., AL
--1850 on census for Limestone Co., AL
--1860 on census for Limestone Co., AL
--Died about 1865 Limestone Co., AL
--Widow died in 1870 in Limestone Co., AL.
I have identified 8 children: Mary Jane, Hugh W., John S., Martha A, Thomas, Sarah E., Louisa Anna J., and Edward J. Tisdale.
In trying to identify my Shirley’s parents, I thought it logical that he was the son of Shirley Tisdale of Louisa Co., VA, who was the son of John Tisdale who d. in 1785.
However, there is nothing to indicate that that is the case.
Instead, I have found that there were a number of Shirley Tisdales:
1. There is a Shirley Tisdale with wife Elizabeth who had children Thomas Tisdale (bpt 1698) and Elizabeth Tisdale (bpt 1700). They are listed in the Christ Church records in Middlesex Co., VA, but I also find them referenced in the St. Peter’s Parish records in New Kent, Co., VA. Also listed is a Thomas Tisdale who had a daughter Alice bpt. In 1708.
2. A Shirley Tisdale and a Thomas Tisdale also appear in the account books for the Thomas Partridge and Co. in 1738 and 1756 (and presumably throughout the period) in Hanover Co., VA. Clearly this is too early to be the son of John who died in 1785.
3. Shirley Tisdale is named in his father’s will (John Tisdale) in 1785 in Louisa Co., VA. He has a brother John and a number of sisters. Although the published reports only list two daughters (Elizabeth and Judith) as his children, probate records from 1833 in Louisa Co. Va and several public notices about a lawsuit listed in 1830 in the Virginia Enquirer indicate that he had the following children: Elizabeth (m.Parks Parrish), William, Tarleton, George #, Judith (m. Richard Henley and William Hughson), John S., Joseph, Nancy (who m. John Chewning), and Henry Tisdale. None of the sources list a son Shirley. Elizabeth, William andJohn went to Barren Co., KY. Tarleton and Joseph went to Fluvanna Co., VA.George went to Simpson Co., KY. Henry went to Mason Co., KY. Judith stayed in Louisa Co., VA. Nancy left Louisa, but has not been traced. Her share of the inheritance was passed to a representative for her husband in 1833. The records indicate Shirley died in 1826. There was a lawsuit cited as Allen vs. Shirley Tisdales estate in 1829 and another lawsuit in 1830 (listed in the Richmond Enquirer).
4. Shirley Tisdalde of Hanover Co., VA. He is listed on the tax rolls for 1789 and 1800. Is this the same as #3 or someone else? Also listed is a John Tisdale in 1789.
5. Shirley Tisdale of Crittenden Co., KY indicated on the 1850 and 1860 censuses that he was born about 1799 in SC (a curious location because his siblings were all b. in NC and his father is on the 1800 census forEdgecombe Co., NC). Shirleyis listed in Hardeman Co., TN in 1830 and appears to have been the one who married Rachel Owen in Williamson Co., TN In 1829. In addition, he had wife Lucy (in 1850) and married Mrs. Margaret Coon in 1854 in Crittenden. He was the son of Edward Tisdale who died in 1816 in Wilson Co., TN, who most believe to have been the son of
Renison Tisdale who died in 1811 in Edgecombe Co., NC.He was in turn the son of William Tisdale who died in 1752 in Amelia Co., VA.There was also a cluster of Tisdales in Williamson Co., TN including an older John (b. 1760-1770), Renison J. (b. 1799, VA who went to Daviess Co., IN) and Washington G. (b. 1802 VA, who went to Cape Girardeau Co., MO),There was also a Haley Tisdale, b. 1782 VA who lived near Renison in Daviess Co., IN in 1850.The 1830 census of Williamson Co., TN also lists a Charles Tisdale who is a free person of color. I’m not sure who this older John is or how he fits with Renison (d. 1811) or Edward, although with an apparent son named Renison, there must be a connection. This John is not included in the will of Renison in 1811, but perhaps received his inheritance earlier; his children indicate they were born in VA.
6. Shirley Tisdale, born in 1838 in TN and married Mary “Polly” Wells in 1859 in AR.He was the son of Oren G. Tisdale and Emily Moore. Oren G. was the brother toShirley Tisdale #4. He is named in a published lawsuit from AR regarding one of his daughters and his wife, who after his death marriedJohn R. Brady.
7. Shirley Tisdale, b. 1909, OK was the son of Charles W. T. Tisdale, who was the son of Shirley Tisdale #6.
8. Shirley A. Tisdale, b. 1874, Limestone, Co., AL was the son Edward J. Tisdale, who was the son of Shirley Tisdale #1.
9. Shirley B. Tisdale, b. 1869, Livingston Co., KY was the son of Stephen B. Tisdale (b. 1831, TN) and grandson of Shirley Tisdale #5 of Crittenden Co.
So, I still don’t know who my Shirley Tisdale (b. 1788) belongs to.But, the given name Shirley shows up among the descendants of John Tisdale who d. in 1785 and among the descendants of William Tisdale who d. in 1752. It makes me think there must be a tie back to the Shirley and Thomas Tisdale from around 1700 in New Kent or Middlesex Co.
One other set of tidbits. Among the many bits of information that I have received over the years was thatmy Shirley Tisdale was the son of Shirley Tisdale son of John, but that he was the son by another wife (not Ursula Terrell) . A researcher with whom I corresponded indicated that an older researcher had reported that my Shirley’s mother was named Nancy Clark. There was Nancy Clark who married a John Tisdale on 13 Mar 1787 in Mecklenburg Co., VA, sec. Thomas Clark. This fits with my Shirley’s birth in 1788. In reviewing material, I found that Petersburg, where my Shirley enlisted for the War of 1812 is in Dinwiddie Co., VA. The William Tisdale with whom he enlisted seems to have been the son of JohnTisdale and Eleanor Dickey and grandson of the John Tisdale who d. in 1785. A number of deeds in Louisa Co. selling off property from the parents estate indicate that William was of Dinwiddie Co.The latest record I can find is 1813 in the deeds. The soldier William Tisdale died in 1818 in New Orleans and this is documented by an obituary in the Virginia Enquirer that mentions his war record.
So, that places my Shirley Tisdale in Dinwiddie Co. in 1812 and associated with a William Tisdale whose know uncle was also named Shirley Tisdale (of Louisa Co).
Hanover Co. is adjacent to Louisa. We have a John Tisdale on the tax records for 1789, but he is not listed on the 1800 list (although a Shirley Tisdale is listed on both).I have an anecdotal reference that my Shirley Tisdale was the son of a Nancy Clark Tisdale. Nancy Clark married John Tisdale in 1787 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. In the unrecorded estates of Dinwiddie Co., VA, there is a court recordof a John Tisdale who died on 28 Dec 1797 in Henrico Co., VA, but whose estate was administered in Dinwiddie Co., VA. There are a lot of bits and pieces and the whole story may never be found, but it seems like there may be another Shirley Tisdale in Hanover Co., VA who is there in 1738 and 1756 who may tie into this.
Does anyone have any more information that could sort this out?
Thanks
Guy Perry
