If anyone knows anymore information please contact me at lisabural@yahoo.com Slaves Named in Wills Halifax County, North Carolina, 1758-1854 King George County, Virginia, 1721-1804 (updated weekly) Virginia relaxed its emancipation laws in 1782, allowing masters to free their slaves by will, deed or other instrument of writing. However, North Carolina maintained strict restrictions on manumission throughout this period--prohibiting manumission except for "meritiorious service." Slaves freed by Quakers without approval were taken up by the sheriff and sold. . Many of the North Carolina emancipations that were approved by the legislature are recorded by William L. Byrd, III, In Full Force and Virtue: North Carolina Emancipation Records, 1713-1860. Only one case is recorded from Halifax County: Julius Zollicoffer's will in 1858.# Slaves named in Wills: Halifax County, North Carolina, 1758-1854; King ... p.13, I Thomas Jones...lands in Virginia to be rented out...my negroes in N.
