Alice/Allice Mills (or Scott)- orphan?

I am seeking information on my gg-grandmother Alice Mills, born 1852-1858 in Missouri. I haven't found any record of her before 1870 where she shows up on the federal census for Hardeman county TN. She is listed as Allice Mills, age 18 from Missouri.

She is living with the Lycurgus W Scott family. LW was from Illinois and his wife Abby was from Indiana.

In 1880 there is an Allice Scott, age 27, who is recorded as niece to LW. I believe this is the same person but am not sure.

In 1910 Gilda Jane Scott, LW's daugther, has married William P Hackney of NC and Alice Mills and her son Cleveland Washington (1887-1942) are living with them. Alice is recorded as a "friend" and Cleveland as "raised".

There is conflicting evidence of her birthplace. Later census records of her son indicate Tennessee as her birthplace. Then in 1930, her birthplace is recorded as "Mossuri".

Also, a death certificate I just received today indicates a Allice (written as Alloce?) Mills born in Hardeman co TN with parents born in Hardeman who died in 1916 at about 65 years of age. If she were an orphan from MO then perhaps these are the adoptive parents. The father appears to be Samuel Mills and the mother's maiden name is Scott.

There is the possibility that she was not only an orphan but a Cherokee orphan. This may be an impossible request if Mills is her adoptive name and her birth name is lost to time.
