Is RW Reynolds' first wife Sarah Isabella McCarn, the daughter of Hugh McCarn and Margaret Elizabeth Gillis? If so, is she the niece of James L Smith's first wife, Elizabeth Gillis? Seems strange that two daughters would both be named Elizabeth... ancestry.com has several trees that link the two.

In the 1880 US Federal Census record for Corning, Clay County, Arkansas, the widowed wife of James L Smith, Margaret Hawk Smith, is living with her daughter Mary E Emerson Polk Stephens and family. I would not have been able to make the connection without your assistance with Mary's married name(s). I have not seen the letter you mentioned - does it mention the other siblings and step-siblings?
