  of 1060

Mary Elizabeth Alexander was born December 30, 1843 in Probably Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee and she died May 08, 1887 in Mulberry, Franklin County, Arkansas - buried Rankin Cemetery, Lone Elm, Franklin County, Arkansas. She married her first husband, James Oliver Pickens, on February 27, 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee; James Oliver Pickens was born April 01, 1841 in Probably Hardin County, Tenn and he died April 10, 1873 in probably Tenn.
She had two children by him:
1). Laura Pickens in 1864
2). John Alexander Pickensborn born October 1868 of Hardin County, Tennessee and died 1936; married Helen Jane Littlejohn born 1872 Arkansas and she died April 11, 1945 - they married in Little Rock, Paluski County, Arkansas.

Mary is shown on the 1880 Census in District 13, Hardin, Tennessee living with her two children.

Mary Elizabeth Alexander (Pickens) married second James Harrison Clark in 1881 in Probably (Saltillo, Hardin County?) Tennessee. James was born August 20, 1840 in Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee and died August 06, 1916 in Bald Knob, White County, Arkansas - buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Bald Knob, Arkansas. This was his second marriage - he had married Mary's sister Harriet Alexander first, who died in childbirth with their 7th child.

In 1881 he had moved to Franklin County, Arkansas, and he taught in the rural districts near Ozark and Lone Elm. (One source says that in 1880-82 he moved family to West Arkansas - Mulberry, Franklin County. Mulberry, Arkansas was a pioneer town of Franklin County; it is now in Crawford County, just over the border.) (Apparently his son Will was teaching there at the same time -Will taught in 1886.) James H. Clark was 41 and Mary Elizabeth was 38 when they had been married. (Mary Elizabeth's daughter Laura would have been 17, and her son John would have been 12 when they married.)

Mary Elizabeth Alexander Pickens Clark and James Harrison Clark had two daughters after that: Anna and Edna Clark, before her death in Franklin County, Arkansas, six years later on May 08, 1887. Mary Pickens Clark was 44 when she died. It is unknown how old the two girls were. (Eighteen-year-old John Pickens moved to Texas and was never heard from again by the Clark Family.)
The children of Mary and James Clark:
1. Anna Clark was born shortly between 1881 and 1887 in Franklin County, Arkansas and she died after 1937 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington - she would have probably been between 50 and 56 when she died; she married Dick Whitmore who was born after 1880. They lived in Memphis. Dick went to Texas and probably died there. They had 1 child.
2). Edna Clark was born March 12, 1885 in Paragould, Green County, Arkansas and died July 03, 1950 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri; married Sam Walker 'Vandine' Van Dyne born July 08,1873 Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky and died February 17, 1933 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri - both buried Mt. Hope Cemetery, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. They had 1 child.

Mary Elizabeth Alexander Pickens Clark died May 08, 1887 in Franklin County, Arkansas at the age of 44, possibly of childbirth complications, like her sister before her. She is buried in the Rankin Cemetery; it is located at Lone Elm. "The Lone Elm settlement is located near Mulberry in the eastern part of the county and was named thusly for a very large Elm tree, the only one in some distance around. The church and cemetery bears the same name."

When Mary Elizabeth died, James Harrison Clark was left with 9 children and so he remarried again to Mary 'Eliza' Beard born August 18, 1855 of probably Mulberry, Franklin County, Arkansas and died March 08, 1900 Bald Knob, White County, Arkansas - buried Shady Grove Cemetery, Bald Knob, Arkansas - married October 13, 1887 Probably Mulberry, Crawford County, Arkansas.

When Mary Eliza died James married fourth Tennessee 'Tenny' Caroline Hawk Barham born November 04, 1841 (Clifton,) Wayne County, Tennessee and died November 27, 1920 Wisner, Caldwell County, Louisiana - buried Welcome Home Cemetery, Grayson, Caldwell Parish, Louisiana - married April 14, 1901 Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee. (Tenny had married first William Isaiah Barham.
