Ben, it sounds as if your man may have been what was called a "galvanized Yankee". There were I think at least two Cavalry Regiments made up of these guys (The 5th US
Cavalry was one) These men after capture were allowed to take the oath of allegiance to the Union with the provisio that they not have to fight against Confederate forces. They were sent out west to help control the
Indian tribes during the rest of the war.
There is a book on these outfits that I have seen and I think the title is simply "Galvanized Yankees"
