My great grandfather, John R. Howard, was born in 1856. I have no information on where he was born, or who his parents were, or what happened to him after my grandfather was born. He was married in Fair Garden, Sevier Co. TN in 1876 to my great grandmother, Rebecca Elmore. He was listed as a boot maker, age 24, in the 1880 census in Fair Garden. The family story is that they made their way to Pleasant Plain Iowa, where they were members of the Quaker Church, and had one son, my grandfather, in approx. 1893. Rebecca died in 1906, leaving an approximately thirteen year old son, my grandfather, John Harrison Howard. Sometime between the time my grandfather was born and the time Rebecca died, John R. left town and the story goes on to say he returned to TN and started up a shoe factory in Knoxville. I have been told that in the late 1930's, there was an old building in Knoxville with the words "Howard's Shoe Factory." Rebecca Howard is buried in the small Pleasant Plain Friends cemetery, along with John Howard 1812(TN)-1902(TN), a couple of his daughters, and one of his wives. There are no other Howards listed in the cemetery. This makes me wonder if John Howard 1812 could be John R's father, and Rebecca's father-in-law? If he were, I believe the only possibility would be if John R. was the first child of Rachael Hull and John Howard 1812, but he is not listed with their three daughters anywhere I have looked. If anyone has any information on the parents or siblings of John R. Howard 1856, where he was born, whatever happened to him, or if he had any other children I would really appreciate it.
