Finding earliest records

Knox County, Tennessee was formed from Greene & Hawkins counties in 1792. And then Roane County was formed from Knox County (and Indian Lands) in 1801.

If a family lived in the region that was to become Roane County in 1801 - but they lived there between 1790 and 1800, where would the records for that family be?

I assume that the records would be in Knox County where they have land records beginning 1791; and they have probate and court records beginning 1792.

Does anyone have experience searching the earliest records for this region? If I am able to go to Tennessee (I live a few thousand miles away!), what are the best resources in Knoxville? Library? Genealogy Society? Courthouse?

Any information or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thank you.
