"prostitute" in 1880 Lauderdale census

I was recently doing some census research in Lauderdale County, TN and found a household with two females, ages 15 and 18, whose occupation was listed as "prostitute." This was in District 2, which I believe was Ripley, TN. I have never seen this before in many years of census research. Does anyone know if this was common in the Lauderdale, TN census records? My first thought is that no woman would have given this information to the census taker. Second, did he write this down because he had personal knowledge that these were "loose" women? Or, had he heard rumors about these women, had tried and been rebuffed by them, and he got even by writing this in the census? BTW, they were not in the family I was researching! Same surname, but no kin. Does anyone have any other idea about this sort of listing?
