Thank you for all the help. The Chapmans belonged to a Cumberland Presbyterian Church. John H. and 2 children are buried there. Maybe John H. Chapman knew William C. Butler from the church or from the boarding school where Damaris L. Shelton Chapman taught music. I don't recognize the Butler name among any neighbors back in Yadkin, Stokes, Rockingham or Surry Co., North Carolina where the Sheltons and Chapmans lived before heading west.
