Real life drama in Columbia, Murry Co. TN 1822/26. The family of Thomas Dyson CLARK moved from Hopkins Co. Ky to Columbia in 1822. In the family was a wife Jane CUNNINGHAM CLARK,son Joseph Addison (Zachariah), Rebecca Jane and Narcissa Parmelia. On 29 Sept 1823 Narcissa Parmelia died and was laid to rest in the "village grave yard". Thomas Clark was a merchant and bought and sold cotton to take to market in New Orleans. After a load was sent to market Thomas Clark left Columbia to pick up the money due him, from the buyer a Mr CHAPIN and Clark never returned. The family was told by Clark's employee, a Mr. SPEARS, who had gone with Clark to New Orleans that Mr Clark had died. Jane Clark who was expecting another child lost her home and business to creditors who took her to court and had the property seized and sold at a sheriffs auction.There was among the citizens one kind soul, Mr ESTES who offered a cottage in town without charging rent.One of the Clark children was ill in both mind and body and afraid of being shuned or her other children being made fun of Jane chose to live 3 miles out of town on the Bigbee Rv.The Bigbee and the Duck river offered Fishing and the hunting of squirrels for the eldest son. The Clark's were Methodist and their class leader was"Brother MADDEN. Joseph /Zackariah was shown kindness while in the "Sons of Liberty" by a Mr Gibson Grand Marshal of the July 4th 1826 event in Columbia. Other good memories told by Joseph/Zackariah were of classmates WALKER AND POLK (James K. POLK Family) and the tails of Lottery tickets. Yes even back then Lottery tickets. There was also three schools in town one was Mr. CARR'S. Another run by a stern women. In town was a HARDIN family Swan Hardin had been in Maury Co. since 1807. the Hardins had a "beef with two men PORTER AND WILLIAMSON and killed them. Old man Hardin was left to take the blame for the killings and the sons made off for Texas. The best remembered event was Lafayette's visit to Nashville and Joseph and his father went to see him. After the death of Thomas the family left Maury Co. and headed for AL to join the Cunningham family.
