Wilson, Ellis, and related families

My Wilson ancestors, including Patrick W. who married Mary C. Barnett, his father Hugh Preston who married Nancy culton, and his father David who married Jane Wear, came from the Athens, McMinn County, area to Stone and Barry counties in southwest Missouri. My Ellis ancestors including Ezekiel who was married to Margaret Ann Mackey and his son Alfred B. who was married to Matilda Lawson, also came to Stone and Barry counties. Both families came in the 1840s and 1850s. I am curious why so many families, including Maples, Burk, and Williams, came to southwest Missouri from the McMinn County area. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with related families.
