I have found that the "Lela" who married my great-grandfather, James M. Hicks in 1916 in McNairy Co., TN., was the daughter of E. (can't make out his first name on the 1900 census) White, born 1844 in MS., and Eliza Horn, a much younger wife, born 1874.
I am uncertain, but believe she was the "Lela B. Wyatt" listed as the one who married Robert L. King in McNairy Co., Nov. 26, 1912 and that her surname was misspelled as Wyatt, when it was "White".
Lela's name was Lela King when she married my great-grandfather, James M. HIcks on 26 March, 1916 in McNairy Co.
James and Lela, along with his children by his 1st marriage, left McNairy Co., shortly after they married and moved first to Lauderdale Co., TN., where they had two children together: Fannie Pearl Hicks born Jan. 21, 1917, and an infant son who died at the age of 1 month on Nov. 10, 1918. Family oral history is that Lela died giving birth to this son. I haven't been able to find her funeral records or grave yet.
James M. Hicks left Lauderdale Co., immediately following the death of Lela and moved to the 12th dist. of Dyer Co. near Fowkles, TN. He buried his infant son there at Mount Vernon Cemetery and Fannie Pearl died at the age of 8 in 1925, just 3 years after her father James M. Hicks died there in 1922. Both James and daughter Fannie Pearl are buried at Holly Springs.
Fannie Pearl and infant son are both in unmarked graves.
If anyone knows the full name of Lela's father "E C. White" (looks like Emma__ C. on the 1900 census in McNairy Co.), I'd love to know what it was.
