The James C. GILES in the 1900 Meigs Co, TN census that Roy Godsey wrote about [see bottom for excerpt] is the son of William and Peggy (nee HENSLEY/HENCILY] GILES. He was James Calvin "Calvin" GILES, a 43d TN Infantry veteran.

The William GILES with Cora and son in that same census and district is Calvin's son, William Morgan GILES, who served as Harriman, Roane Co, TN city judge for over 30 years.

I don't know how or if the Sarah GILES, widow, in the Meigs census is related to any of those GILES folks, but I'd sure give my eye teeth to find out!

James Calvin GILES had two brothers that I know of:

William H. GILES, b. abt 1840
and
Samuel M. GILES, b. abt 1848

Sarah might well be the widow of one of them. I have NO information beyond the 1860 census entry in Knox County for the family (William GILES). I've double-checked, and I have not misread "my" Samuel's middle initial ("M") in the 1860 Knox Co census, but maybe it is reported wrongly there? Or, could he have had -- as did a few people I've researched -- *two* middle names?

If you have **any** leads to connect Samuel and Sarah (Renfroe) Jiles with the GILES I've been describing, please write a follow-up.

You can read more about the GILES line of James C. GILES in my message (and my desperate search for them) on genforum's GILES family forum at

=====Roy Godsey answered your intial posting [excerpt]:===

"There were three other Giles's in the 1900 Meigs census: Chris D., age 36, Nancy 26
James C?, age 55, (could be a brother of Samuel?), widower; Willliam 31, (Feb 1870),Cora 19 (Jan1881) and William, 1, (Apr1899)
Giles and Jiles appear be be same surname, different spelling."
