Malinda Nelson was the daughter of Adam Nelson (1837-1923) and his first wife, Louisa Collins. Adam Nelson was the son of Hanse Nelson, Jr. (b.1811) and his first wife, Polly Ford. Hanse Nelson, Jr. was the son of Hanse and Delilah (Taylor) Nelson. The Nelsons are traced back to Ambrose Nelson who came to the Colony of Maryland in the 1670s. Adam Nelson's first wife, Louisa, died prior to the ennumeration of the 1870 Census and Malinda was residing with her paternal grandfather at that time. I am a great-grandson of Adam Nelson's youngest daughter, Sarah Minerva Belle Nelson, who was born to him by his second wife, Martha Monday. I remember my great-grandmother very well as she lived to be 95 years old. She spoke of her father and siblings often. She passed away in 1977. It would appear some people have incorrectly identified Malinda as being a daughter of Hanse Nelson, Jr. This serves as a valuable lesson in NOT assuming all children within a household were the children of the head of the household, unless specifically identified as such. This is especially true in pre-1880 Census records, where the members of a household were not identified in terms of their kinship to the head of the household. If you wish to discuss the Nelsons further, please feel free to contact me directly at my e-mail address. Charles Ward CMW12635@aol.com Notify Administrator about this message?
