Hanse Nelson did not have a daughter, Malinda. Malinda was his granddaughter. She was the daughter of Adam Nelson and his first wife, Louisa Collins. Adam Nelson was a son of Hanse Nelson and his first wife, Polly Ford. Adam Nelson's first wife died prior to the ennumeration of the 1870 Census and Malinda was residing with her paternal grandfather.

This can serve as a valuable lesson, not to assume children found in pre-1880 households were necessarily the children of the head of the household.

I am a great-grandson of Adam Nelson's youngest daughter (by his second wife, Martha Monday), Sarah Minerva Belle Nelson, wife of Joseph Luther Inman. My great-grandmother lived to be 95 years old and died in 1977. What's more, her father lived into his eighties and died in the early 1920s. Through my grandmother and great-grandmother, I learned much about the Nelsons.

If you wish to discuss the Nelsons further, please contact me at my personal e-mail address.
