Hanse Nelson (b.1811) was the son of Hanse Nelson and Delilah Taylor. He married Polly Ford, daughter of Edmund Ford, as his first wife. Following her death, he married Pheraba Buttram, but this marriage was effectively annulled as it was not consummated. Hanse Nelson was married a third time to Joanna Collins. Hanse Nelson, Jr. had children by his first and third wives. He had no children by Pheraba Buttram.

Hanse Nelson, Jr. was a deaf mute. In the nineteenth century this was indelicately referred to as being "deaf and dumb." That actually reflected poorly on the understanding of the people who encountered deaf people at the time, for being deaf had no bearing on their intelligence.

It wasn't uncommon to find people who were looked over in census records. It's also not uncommon to find discrepancies in birth years. It wasn't uncommon for people, especially in rural areas, to not know the year of their birth. That's almost certainly the situation with John W. Nelson.

The most reliable sources for information are the sources that are contemporary, or in other words, the ones which were recorded at or near the time the event took place. So, a death certificate is not considered a one hundred percent trustworthy record of someone's birth year. It's most reliable for recording someone's death. If you want to reliably place John W. Nelson's birth year, look to the contemporary records. The records closest to his birth would likely be more reliable.

I don't have my records in front of me, but I don't recall
Hanse Nelson, Jr. and Polly Ford having a son, John W. Nelson. I would have to consult my records, but John W., if the son of Hanse Nelson, Jr., would have to be a son by his third marriage, to Joanna Collins.

I am a great-great-great grandson of Hanse Nelson, Jr. (b.1811) and his first wife, Polly Ford, daughter of Edmund Ford. My line is through their son, Adam Nelson (and his second wife, Martha Monday), to Adam's daughter, Sarah Minerva Belle Nelson, wife of Joseph Luther Inman. My great-grandmother, Sarah Minerva Belle Nelson, lived to be 95 years old and passed away in 1977.

If you wish to discuss the Nelsons further, please contact me at my personal e-mail address.
