CATHERINE SANDERS and her POISON PIES

In 1835 Alabama, my Great-Grandfather HARDY HOLMAN SANDERS married CATHERINE ANNE CLAMPET, daughter of MATHIAS MASTEN CLAMPET and REBECCA NICHOLSON CLAMPET.

At this time, do not know for certain where they lived after marriage until CIVIL WAR times when they were then located near Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee. Nor, do I know exactly where all the family went to live later in life.

Hardy and Catherine were the parents of my Grandfather, ANDREW MASTEN SANDERS [born 1837, location unknown] and he may have been married before my Grams ELIZA ANN HENDREN in 1885 Alabama.

HARDY and CATHERINE had approximately twelve other children; all their names are unknown, except PINCKNEY ~ nicknamed "PINK" ~ and he was killed at the age of 13 years during the Civil War while at home alone molding bullets.

My Great-Grandmother CATHERINE was hiding her young children [and/or probably grandchildren too], including some cattle, in the woods behind their home. She left her son PINCKNEY behind to mold bullets. When she returned to get him and the rest of their cattle, soldiers had been there and killed him.

Alone, she dug a hole and buried her son, then went to her kitchen and baked POISON PIES leaving them on the table for the next soldiers that came by. Only then did she take the rest of the cattle and rejoin the children back in the woods.

Grams CATHERINE was a herbalist, and the pies she made THAT PARTICULAR DAY were probably made with POKE BERRIES!

Her daughter-in-law, my Grams ELIZA ANN HENDREN, also said Catherine was a doctor like her father, MATHIAS MASTEN CLAMPET... which today, when considering Catherine's excellent knowledge of herbs and the fact that she delivered babies too... would probably be considered a mid-wife more so than doctor. Her father Mathias, perhaps in the same category.

In 1835 when HARDY HOLMAN SANDERS was married to CATHERINE ANNE CLAMPET in Madison County Alabama by a JP, they then drove their buggy over night.... well, maybe it took a couple or three nights..... to Jackson County Alabama for a second ceremony with family.

Perhaps, this second ceremony was held down around SAUTA ~ the old Indian Village ~ southwest of Scottsboro, Alabama a few miles??

By HARDY and CATHERINE having such a great number of children ~ seems to me that her POISON PIES retribution for the death of her young son near Lynchburg during the CIVIL WAR would have been carried down through generations by some of their other children. And, perhaps, their buggy ride too........

Are there any of my HARDY HOLMAN SANDERS relatives out there today......
