It was the Indian roundup where all the Indians living East of the Mississippi River were herded West across the Mississippi. One quarter of the 16,000 Indian population died of disease on that miserable trip. A lot of white families had ties to the Indians and left in a hurry at the time of the roundup. If you type Trail of Tears into your Internet search engine you will find much written about it. Still no explanation for the mass migration of TN whites to IL at that time except some of them had inter married with Indian families. I don't know a lot about this subject. It is new to me.
