Samuel and Patience Stockton owned 220 acres on the north side of the French Broad River in Sevier County, Tennessee. This 220 acre property is land that they acquired from Thomas Stockton, Sr., in the year 1800. The deed stated “Thomas Stockton County of Cumberland . . . and Samuel Stockton of Sevier County the State of Tenesee.” In about 1795 Thomas Stockton, Sr., moved most of his family from the French Broad River in Sevier County to Stockton’s Valley, then Cumberland County, now Clinton County, Kentucky. On 11 September 1799 Thomas and Mary Stockton gave a power of attorney to Allen Bryan, who owned a homestead that adjoined the 220 acre property that Thomas sold to Samuel. The southern border of both of these properties was the French Broad River. Located next to the “Old Stockton Farm” is Saffell Island, and just downriver is the Saffell Family Cemetery, which was originally a Bryan Family Cemetery. Allen Bryan (1772-1839) and his wife Elizabeth Bryan (1786-1862) are buried there. Samuel Stockton was still alive in August of 1824 when he was granted 50 acres, but he apparently died before 1830. Patience Stockton was listed as the head of household on the 1830 census, and she also was “granted” the 220 acres in her name on 30 March 1830. The 7 May 1831 survey of this 1830 grant shows this property to be same property that was sold to Samuel by Thomas Stockton in 1800. A plat map dated 1 March 1833, shows Patience Stockton’s property. In this plat map her property is shown divided into lots. Patience was given her widow’s dower of 70 acres, and the other lots appear to have been given to her children, with each lot having a first name written on it. One of the lots has the name Elizabeth written on it. Elizabeth Stockton, who was born 30 April 1809, married Russel Reneau on 7 July 1829. The front of the plat map is in ink. On the back of the plat map written in what appears to be pencil are the names of four men, one of the four names is Russel Reneau. On this plat map it was spelled Russel, with just one “L”, and the first “s” was written as a long or descending “s.” No explanation is given as to why these four names were written on the back of this 1833 plat map, but it appears that three of these men had married daughters of Samuel and Patience, and the fourth was Samuel Stockton, a son of Samuel and Patience Stockton. Samuel and Patience Stockton’s 220 acre farm on the French Broad River in Sevier County was less than 3 miles from Jefferson County, Tennessee where the Reneau family lived. In the 1820’s Samuel Stockton and Lewis Reneau, the father of Russel Reneau, were both early leaders of the Dumplin Valley Baptist Church. Thomas Stockton, Sr., who was living in Cumberland County, Kentucky when he sold the 220 acres to Samuel Stockton, was one of the charter members of the Clear Fork Baptist Church in Stockton’s Valley. It appears that Widow Patience Stockton died about 1848, as this is when her children started selling off the “Old Stockton Farm” as it was referred to in several deeds. On 21 Oct 1848 Russel (again with just one L) and Elizabeth Reneau sold their part of the “Stockton Farm” to Wm. M. Bryan, as did some of the other Stockton heirs. Wm. M. Bryan was the son of Allen Bryan, the neighbor that Thomas and Mary Stockton had given the power of attorney to in 1799. Russel and Elizabeth (nee Stockton) Reneau can be found in the 1830 census living in Jefferson County, Tennessee. By 1850 Russel and Elizabeth Reneau can be found living in Newton County, Georgia. Russel is 42, born in Tennessee, and Elizabeth is 40, born in Tennessee. Russel Reneau died 1 Sep 1865 in Arkansas. It appears that Elizabeth died 21 May 1898 in Somervell County, Texas, and is buried in Squaw Creek Cemetery. Another of the names written on the back of the plat map is Jackson Roberts. This is James Jackson Roberts who married Cynthia Stockton on 4 Jan 1840. Cynthia’s name was also written on one of the lots. James J. (Jackson) Roberts can be found living in Sevier County, Tennessee in 1840. James and Cynthia (nee Stockton) Roberts moved to Washington County, Arkansas, where they are found on the 1850 census along with their young family. Also shown in the 1850 census living in Washington County, Arkansas, was W. S. (Wilson) Roberts, the brother of James Jackson Roberts. Wilson Roberts was one of the four names written on the back of the 1833 plat map. Living with Wilson Roberts was his son, John Roberts, age 8, born in Alabama. Also living with Wilson Roberts and his son was Jane Stockton, age 37, born in Tennessee. Jane’s name was written on one of the lots. It appears that Jane is the unmarried sister-in-law of Wilson Roberts, and is probably caring for her nephew, John Roberts. Also living in the household is an Eliza S. Wilcox, age 37, born in Alabama. Jane Stockton, born about 1813, was not married when she sold her interest in the Old Stockton Farm on 19 Jan 1850 to C. Cown. She is also shown as Jane Stockton in the 1850 census. The last of the four names on the back of the plat map is Samuel Stockton. This would be the son of Samuel and Patience Stockton. Samuel married Mahala Ellis on 4 Feb 1840, and he and his new bride are shown living in Sevier County in the 1840 census. Samuel and Mahala Stockton moved to Mercer County, Missouri about 1850, and they are shown living there in the 1860 census. In about 1866 they moved to Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri, where they can be found in the 1870 census. On one of the lots the name Robert was written. On 13 Jan 1846, Robert Stockton, age 23, born in Sevier County, Tennessee enlisted in the U. S. Army. The Samuel and Patience Stockton family are the only Stockton family known to be living in Sevier County in the 1820’s. Robert Stockton is later found in the 1850 census, Jefferson, St Louis County, Missouri. Robert is still in the Army, living in Jefferson Barracks, 7th U. S. Infantry, Company C. Robert Stockton is shown as age 24, and born in Tennessee. In the 1830 household of Patience Stockton, Robert is probably one of the two 5-10 year old males. In the 1840 household of Patience Stockton, Robert is probably the 15-20 year old. Others who appear to be siblings of Elizabeth, Samuel, Cynthia, Jane and Robert are Nancy, Ann, Mary, Patience and Alexander, who are all named on the plat map.
