Ross, there was no census or tax lists in that area in
1784-1787. There may have been some court documents that
have survived. Sullivan County was in North Carolina
except for a few years when it separated from North Carolina and became The State of Franklin, then returned
to North Carolina. Tennessee became a State in 1797.
There were some North Carolina Military Land Grants given
during 1784-1787.
You might look at the Salisbury Judical Court Records of
North Carolina, Washington District, for your ancestor.
