I am a descendent of John Tobias through his daughter, Catherine Tobias (m. John Sammetinger). I’ve been trying to figure out how the Tobias’ are related that moved from Schuylkill, Pa to Ohio. As far as I can tell, John Tobias moved to Ohio without a wife (assuming she was deceased). In the 1840 Census, John Tobias in Greene County, Ohio. He is listed as the only male, aged 40 to 50 and 2 females (his daughters, presumably), both aged 15 to 20. In the 1850 Census, John Tobias (age 58) is living in Pusheta Twp, Auglaize County, Ohio with his daughter Catherine and son-in-law John Sammetinger. In the 1860 census, John Tobias (age 67) is now listed with his other daughter, Mary and her husband John Engelhaupt, again in Pusheta Township. In 1870, John Tobias (age 77) is again listed with the family of daughter Catherine Sammetinger in Pusheta Township. Auglaize County Probate death records note John Tobias’ death as 28 Mar 1879.

Other Tobias’ moving from Schuylkill, Pennsylvania to Greene County, Ohio, and then to Allen/Auglaize County Ohio included Jacob Tobias (b. abt. 1791 PA), Abraham Tobias (b. 15 Jun 1796 PA d. 31 Dec 1882 Cridersville, Auglaize County, Ohio), and Samuel (d. 1929). It is likely that these men were brothers of John. I have noted that Samuel married Elizabeth Hanney, Abraham married Catherine Koogler, and Jacob married Mary (Unknown).

There is one other Tobias (George) that migrated from PA to Ohio with the aforementioned men. George was born in 1807, but “The History of Greene County” indicates that he moved to Ohio in 1822 or 1823 when “only fourteen years of age”. The “History” also mentions that his parents, Barbara and Peter Tobias stayed behind in Pennsylvania. Barbara moved to Ohio only after her husband died. Since George was so young when he came to Ohio, it would seem that Abraham, Samuel, Jacob, and John could have been his older brothers.

I would really appreciate any additional details on these families, and I’d be happy to share all the info I’ve gathered on this group.
