An interesting biography/family history of John T. Tobiason Spencer, editor and proprietor of Bridger Times, Bridger, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2. John's father, John Tobiason, born in Norway, was killed in a shipwreck on Lake Ontario when John was an infant. He married Ellen Spencer, native of England, after he came to the US & their only child, John T., was born 13 Sep 1875. Ellen died, 1889, Milwaukee, WI, and her child, John T., was adopted by her brother, Samuel Spencer, a policeman born in England in 1844 & died in Sheboygan, WI, Aug 1917.

John T. was given the name of his adopted father & when he was three years old was taken to England, returning to Sheboygan two years later. He was educated until age 17 when he worked in a chair factory and then became a printer's apprentice at Sheboygan. 1896-1900, he owned his own printing plant. Then, as a furniture manufacturing representative, he traveled out of St. Paul, MN, through ND and MN for five years. In 1905, he located to Missoula, MT, where he worked on the Missoulian newspaper; in 1906, went to Thompson Falls, MT, to start the Sanders County Ledger, then went to Sand Point, ID, for six months. In 1910, he located to Bridger, MT, and in March 1911 bought the Bridger Times, of which he was editor and proprietor. He was an alderman and later mayor of Bridger & owned a ranch three miles south of Bridger.

On 11 Jun 1903, Butte, MT, John T. married Miss Mary J. Pelletier, daughter of Paul and Annie E. Pelletier. Paul Pelletier was an early placer miner and later a stockman in Montana. He died in New Chicago, MT. John and Mary Spencer had no children.
