I spoke to my mother about what she knows about her mother's family.
Her maternal grandfather was a pharmacist in Jedburgh, Scotland. He was apparently "unstable" ie; drank. He eventually went in "for treatment" but he died in the treatment centre. Her maternal grandmother was Margaret Turnbull, from somewhere in the East Borders (poss. Berwickshire). Her grandfather Turnbull was a bit of an activist. He ran the tollgate at the bridge at Berwick-on-Tweed. The toll was abolished as a result.
My grandmother Nancy (preferred to be called Annie) was born in 1892 in Coldstream. Her sisters were Janet (Jennie) a teacher who married Lockerbie Thompson, Margaret (Maggie) Balfour (?) Tocher kept house for the rest of the family and ladies-companion, Mary (Mamie) was a legal secretary, and Suzanne (Susie) who was an artist. Her brother's name was John and was an engineer and designed the wave machine at the pool at Portobello.
My mother's grandmother finally left her husband, with the children and moved to Leith. Annie went to Leith Academy and became a teacher. John died in 1945 or 1946.
I had a number of facts mixed up in my previous message
Maggie, Susie, and Mary lived together in Edinbugh. Mary died of a ruptured aorta and fell out a window. Neighbours speculated she jumped, but not so. Jennie died of a stroke in her 60's in about the late 1970's or early 80's.
