Hi Duncan. Good timing - I am in the process of building a new site covering, amongst other things, Tocher family history. It is available as of today, thehome page being found at

You will find the link from there. The site will help with some of what you are asking about. The 'tax collector' origin is not one I have come across before, but just might be grounded in the fact that the word "tocher" in the Scots language (as opposed to Gaelic) means "dowry"; occasionally it is also used in reference to an inheritance.

I would be grateful for any feedback to care to give on the site (bearing in mind that I still have more to add)
