Tocher Connections

Alexander Tocher married Lillis Davidson, 1820, Auchterless. Lillis was the daughter of George Davidson and Janet Tocher who farmed at Redhill in the parish of Auchterless.

The only clues I have to Alexander’s identity are as follows:

1. Alexander was described at his marriage to Lillis Davidson as “living in the parish of Fyvie”

2. Alexander Tocher and Lillis Davidson had a son baptised 1822 from Standing Stones in the parish of Dyce

Peter Tocher and Helen Mearns had a son William baptised 1821 from Standing Stones, Dyce

3. Alexander’s wife Lillis was born 1783. Alexander was probably a similar age, a relatively late marriage.

Peter Tocher was born 1790, baptised from Templand in the parish of Auchterless, the son of Peter Tocher and Margaret Ewan. Peter snr. died 1824 at Mill of Ardlogie, parish of Fyvie. I can find no recorded birth of an Alexander to Peter Tocher and Margaret Ewan but there is a large gap between the births of his sons William b 1778 and Peter b 1790. Room enough for an Alexander born circa 1783 and for that Alexander to be living with his father in Fyvie in 1820.

Also, Peter Tocher and Helen Mearns’ son Peter had a daughter named Lillias, an uncommon Christian name in North East Scotland at that time.

Alexander Tocher’s mother-in-law, also a Tocher, was born 1753, Templand, Auchterless, the daughter of George Tocher. This may have been the George Tocher who married Janet Peter 1743 Auchterless. Janet Tocher d 1826 and is buried with her daughter Lilis Davidson who died 1833 in the churchyard of Auchterless.

My great aunt by marriage, Hester Minty b 1901 had a sister Maggie Davidson Minty who married a George Reid, son of James Reid and Jane Watson Tocher. My great grandmother apparently told my grandmother that Hester was related to her Husband, James Chillas Durno, son of James Durno and Janet Tocher b 1824 Dyce to Alexander Tocher and Lilis Davidson above. There are several likely connections looking at the surnames involved. I investigated the possible Tocher connection and this is the tree for Jane Watson Tocher.

Jane Watson Tocher b 1872 Banff, was the daughter of James Tocher and Isabella Cowie. James Tocher was born 1847 Forgue, son of Robert Tocher and Lillias Peter who married 1846 in the parish of Auchterless. Robert Tocher was born 1815 Insch, the son of James Tocher and Ann Cruickshank.

I would welcome contact with anyone researching these families.
