Thanks for your reply.As far as I know, the name was originally "Tonjes" with an umlaut over the "o" that later became "oe" upon arrival in America.As early as my ancestor's marriage in Mobile, Alabama, he was spelling his name Toenes as the family has ever since.
Do you know where the name came from originally?I thought I saw another post somewhere suggesting that "Toennies" was the original name several hundred years ago.I am told that the name is a common first name in northern Germany.That would make sense if the name means Anthony in German.
I am attempting to contact one of my distant cousins who researched our family.Hopefully, I will have more to add to the family tree.Right now I just want to verify that what I have is accurate.
