John,
I'm sure I have now tracked down your family.
Given the extra info you provided I'm sure it's the right line, but there are some minor errors...
Charles Toll was baptised 1839 in South Creake, in Norfolk, England.
His father was William Thurlow TOLL and his mother was Mary SIMMONS (not SUMMERS) and they married in 1836 in South Creake.
William Thurlow TOLL died young, in 1845. His widow, Mary, and his children (William Taylor TOLL b 1837, Charles TOLL b 1839, Caroline TOLL b 1841, George TOLL b 1843, Thomas TOLL b 1845,& Eliza TOLL b 1848 - father William TOLL acording to the records!) emigrated to Australia about 1850.Soon after arival in Australia Mary TOLL nee SIMMONS married John WOODS (1852?).She had a further 7 WOODS children.
William Thurlow TOLL was baptised 1817 in South Creake.I believe the parish register says he was illegitimate and neither parent is named.THURLOW is an important family in the area, and the use of the surname may reflect the name of the father or be recognition for any assistence they may have provided for a local pregnant girl.I can find no definite answer (despite 10 years searching for other Australian decendants).
I have a copy of William TOLL's 1845 death certificate. He is described as a labourer (not farmer), aged 27.He died of Consumption on the fourth of February at South Creake. The informant was Elizabeth HIPKIND, who was present at death and made her mark on the certificate (so she probably couldn't spell her name).
An Elizabeth TOLL married a Samuel HIPKIN in 1803 in South Creake.Could this have been William's Grandmother or Aunt? and present at death (whilst his wife looked after the infant children...).
A Mary TOLL married Thomas T. Tailor at Bircham Tofts in 1817.Could the T. stand for Thurlow, perhaps?Bircham Tofts is about 10 miles west of South Creake, with very little in between. It's still mainly rural in that area.I have also researched this Mary TOLL, but that's another story...
On the family Tree, I have your Catherine down as Kit, born 1882 and married to Patrick HOY, with children Desmond, Madge, and John.Unfortunately that's as far as I have for decendants, so any info from you would be appreciated.
If you'd like a copy of the North & South Creake TOLL tree, I'll gladly post you one on reciept of your address and details of how you connect to Catherine.
Kind Regards,
Ken
