My family name is Tomko and I was actually born in Slovakia, where the Tomko family name is quite common. I once asked my grandfather about where the name came from - alas this was back when Yugoslavia was still a country. He lives in a village that was settled in the 1500s and as far as he's aware, there's been a Tomko family there. He also told me there was once a guy that came to see him who was doing a trace on the name - and was told that the first Tomko's slowly made their way to Slovakia from the mountaneous regions of the former Yugoslavia. This went back to something like 900 or 1100 ad, if I remember correctly.
