Toms of Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle, Chesterfield, Amelia in VA; GA and TN
I am researching Edward Thompson Toms/Tombs who married in Amelia Co., VA, 1779 to Elizabeth Ford. He was listed on records through the 1790s in Amelia, Albemarle, Amherst and Chesterfield counties, VA. At one point he was named in a will as "Dr. Edward Thompson Toms." I doubt he actually was a doctor, but then I do not really know.
He along with Col. Joseph Shelton and Joseph Montgomery were sued by Hawes Coleman in Nelson Co., VA, in the early 1800s. Toms never answered the complaint against him and at least one record states that he had removed to Tennessee.
I have been unable to find him in Tennessee, but the name of Edward Thompson Toms/Tombs appears in GA records from 1803 through about 1808. There is also an Edward Toms in Kentucky and Indiana about the same time period.
I know that Edward T. Toms' brother-in-law was Reynard (various spellings) Anderson. He married Mary Ford, a younger sister of Elizabeth. Another of Elizabeth Ford's sisters married Josiah or Joseph Thompson. I do not know if Edward T. Toms and Elizabeth had any children, nor do I know the names of the Thompson children.
In 1803/1804, Edward Thompson Toms was supposedly married to Charlotte Griffin in Amherst County, VA. However, Charlotte's father did not list her name as Charlotte Toms in his will; he simply listed her as Charlotte. Also, Charlotte's brother, Pleasant Griffin, testified against Toms in the 1810 trial against him in Nelson Co., VA, so it seems that at that point there wasn't any love lost between the Toms and Griffin families.
Because of Edward T. Toms' proximity to the Albemarle/Amherst/Nelson county Toms families, I feel there must be some connection. If anyone has any information about Edward Thompson Toms/Tombs or any of the names mentioned in this post, I would love to hear from you. I have been researching this man since 1972, and time is running out.
Thank you.
