James Toner of Wicklow
My family has traced its Toner roots to James Toner, born in Tayglin or Glendalough, County Wicklow, in 1797.He immigrated to New York City after 1850, settled in San Francisco in 1870, and died in S.F. in 1881.Family oral history says his father was also James Toner, an Irish patriot of the "United Irishmen" uprising of 1798.This James Toner was executed by the British on 31 May 1798, a day after the Irish defeat at the Battle of Newtownmountkennedy in County Wicklow.
The Wicklow Family History Centre has been unable to document a link between our James Toner and the Irish patriot of the same name.If anyone has information on the ancestry or descendants of the patriot James Toner of Newtownmountkennedy fame, please reply here or contact me at [email protected].
Thanks very much,
