Hi Laurette,

Just noticed in your posting that you say one of your relatives was a John Tonks who married a Sarah Bate. As you have also mentioned that he was a boatman, do you know if he actually owned several canal boats. As according to the Birmingham Canal Boat Register there are many which are shown as being owned by J. & S. Tonks between the years of 1866 and 1922??

My husbands family are Tonks and his great grandfather was a William Tonks who married an Eliza Wise. At the time of the birth of their son William, they were living at Miles Street, Spring Vale, Aston, Birmingham. He was also a boatman.
