Hi Ryan,

Thanks for making contact. I have hit a brick wall with this family. I am having great trouble finding Benjamin Tonks and his family in the 1851 census. As I said earlier, his children were baptised at West Bromwich but they did not seem to live in West Bromwich. However, I have found a sister to Benjamin living in West Bromwich in the 1851 census. Sarah Tonks married James Gasser at St. Martins Church, Birmingham in 1830. I believe Sarah is Benjamin's sister as she and her husband were witnesses at the wedding of Benjamin's daughter Ann, when she married John Ball in Harborne in 1847. In 1851 Sarah states she was aged 45 and born in West Bromwich. However at this stage I can only find Benjamin and his family in the 1841 census living at Harborne and Benjamin states he is aged 40 but was NOT born in Staffordshire. So you see the 1851 census is my best hope.

Perhaps Benjamin and Sarah are Uncle and Aunt to your Samuel. I will keep your details and if I find any more will let you know. Do you know what occupation your Samuel was engaged in?

Regards,
Jan Vernon
