I am also looking for John Tonks who was born in Gloucester, date unknown. His wife was Sarah Jane BATE. I don't have very much info on them at all. He was a boatman. Family sources (don't know how reliable) have told me that one had been married previously. I noted in the 1881 Census for Warwick (where my family lived) that a John Tonks (37yo) and his son Walter (23yo) were on the boat "Hinton" on Worcester Wharf. This places John being a father at age 14yo!! So I would say Sarah had been married previously. My grandfather, Edward Tonks was born in Gloucester on 11 March 1887. I know he had a sister Florence, and I have been told that he also had a half sister Violet, and perhaps brothers Walter and Harry. This info is very vague. The 1881 Census for Warwick also shows a Sarah Tonks (47yo) living with three children - Arthur, 18yo, b.Birmingham, Florence, 12yo, b.Birmingham, and Alfred, 7yo, b.Birmingham. The address was 183 Warstone Lane, Birmingham. I'm not sure if this entry and the one for John Tonks are connected, but it could be. My grandfather married Edith Eliza White on 4 August 1912 at the Parish Church, St Oswald, Bordesley, Birmingham. He lived at 14 Somerville Road, St Oswald, Bordesley. Hoping someone can connect to this. Laurette Notify Administrator about this message?
